What is a fizetési meghagyás?

A fizetési meghagyás (payment order) is a demand to pay a monetary claim, issued by a közjegyző (notary) without a hearing. It means that someone is asserting a claim against you, but it is not yet a judgment.

How to recognise it

The header shows the notary's name and office address, below it the ügyszám (case number), for example 15102/Ü/03871/2026. The heading reads "FIZETÉSI MEGHAGYÁS". The order names the jogosult (claimant) and the kötelezett (debtor), the legal basis of the claim, the principal, the interest and the procedural costs, and calls on you to pay or to file an ellentmondás (objection) within 15 days. The order also states that the notary has not examined the claim on its merits.

What a fizetési meghagyás is not

It is not a judgment and not a debt collector's letter. A document headed "Európai fizetési meghagyás" (European order for payment) is a different procedure with a different deadline and a different form; this page does not apply to it.

The 15-day deadline runs from service, not from the printed date, and does not run during the ítélkezési szünet (court recess). Details and an example on the Deadline page.

Your options

Asking for a payment deferral or instalments is not an ellentmondás: the deadline runs out and the order becomes final.
